My soul’s purpose — what is it, and how do I find it?
Considering the cosmos. How do I fit in?
“What am I supposed to do with my life?”
Toward the end of college, I remember this question surrounding everyone. The pressure was immense. It felt like the answer to that one question would define my existence.
I realize now that I misunderstood what purpose really is. I believed purpose was something I had to “figure out” or “find.” Now, a few decades on, I know that my soul’s purpose isn’t something I discover in a single moment. Nor is yours. We live, learn, and evolve into it throughout our lives.
The Nature of the Soul’s Journey
Our soul’s purpose is to evolve and grow through life's lessons.
All of our experiences, joyful and challenging and everything in between, serve as opportunities to align more deeply with our true selves. Sometimes, these lessons are obvious, but more often, they reveal themselves only when we reflect on our journey.
The question then changes from “What am I supposed to do with my life?” to “What am I meant to learn here?” and more, “How can I embrace this moment as part of my evolution?”
Is Purpose a Destination?
Have you ever considered your purpose as a destination—a singular job, a role such as a spouse or mother, or a calling that will “complete” you?
Your purpose isn’t something you just land on one day and say, “This is it!” Instead, it unfolds as you take action, connect with your intuition, and pay attention to the world around you. It’s a constant conversation with the universe/the divine, and your highest self. You need only to tune in.
Your Body Holds the Key
One of the most profound tools for discovering your purpose is your body. Your body is a reservoir of wisdom, offering signals through your emotions, energy levels, and gut feelings. Your body also carries lessons from generations before you, becoming a beacon for how the unique cocktail of you can navigate the world.
By slowing down and tuning in, you can uncover truths your rational mind might overlook. The mind is strong and pushy, always hoping to analyze and figure things out. However, the expansion or contraction you feel in a given situation can tell you more about how to proceed than the mind can ever justify or explain.
Meditation, mindful movement, or simply sitting with your feelings can help you hear what your body is telling you.
Clarity Through Action
We often believe we need perfect clarity before taking the next step – have you ever said “I’ll do it when I get my life figured out?” – but this kind of clarity rarely comes from overthinking, working, or architecting. It comes from doing. Taking small, joyful actions that light you up can lead you closer to your purpose. Each step reveals more of the path ahead, no matter how small. You don’t need to have the full picture to start—just the willingness to move forward. Sometimes the scariest part!
Your Purpose is Already Within You
We cannot confine purpose to a job title or life achievement; it’s your essence. It’s present in every moment, in every breath, simply because you exist. From a spiritual perspective, living in alignment with your purpose means tuning into your inner self and ensuring your actions, thoughts, and feelings reflect your core truth.
When you’re in alignment, life feels more fluid and intuitive. Easy and flowing. You might notice synchronicities—those “coincidences” that seem too perfect to be random. These moments can serve as signs that you’re on the right path. Alignment isn’t about perfection; it’s about presence. It’s about asking yourself,
“Does this choice feel expansive or restrictive?”
“Am I acting out of love and inspiration or fear and obligation?”
Declare It!
Once you start to sense what lights you up, name it. Notice the ways your purpose naturally manifests in your life. Maybe you feel alive creating, teaching, connecting, or nurturing. Use this as your north star, guiding how you show up in the world.
Intentionally infuse your purpose into more areas of your life. If you’re passionate about creating meaningful relationships, focus on bringing that energy into your family, friendships, and workplace. Purpose isn’t static—it’s dynamic and grows as you grow.
No More Pressure
The weight of “finding your soul’s purpose” can feel overwhelming. But sometimes, the most meaningful thing you can do is simply acknowledge your existence moment to moment. Living fully in the present and noticing the beauty of life as it unfolds is often the best way to honor your soul’s journey.
Purpose doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s only a remembrance of who you really are. It’s in the simple acts of love, kindness, and presence. It’s in the way you show up for yourself and others. And it’s in the quiet, sacred moments when you feel completely aligned with who you are.
Last Reflection
Our soul’s purpose isn’t a puzzle to solve; it’s a journey to embrace. It’s about evolving, learning, and aligning with our truest selves. As you move through life, trust that each step and lesson guides you back to the essence of who you are. There’s no rush, no pressure—just an open invitation to grow, explore, and be.
Remember: Your purpose isn’t the destination. It’s something you remember, define, and then just LIVE.
